Three provinces in Mozambique have faced a major cyclone disaster, with winds reaching up to 260 km/h and torrential rainfall.

Cyclone Chido, which claimed 34 lives in Mozambique, caused widespread devastation by ripping off roofs, damaging civilian infrastructure, and destroying power and communication systems.

The cyclone also impacted the Comoros archipelago on the same day. While damage there was primarily material, no fatalities were reported.

Prior to that, on December 14, Chido struck the French Mayotte archipelago, leaving significant destruction in its wake. Authorities in Mayotte fear several hundred deaths might result from the cyclone’s aftermath.

Forecasts indicate that Cyclone Chido will move toward Malawi on December 17 and is expected to dissipate near Zimbabwe by December 18.
