Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said Friday that 55 Ghanaians have been killed while fighting in Ukraine since the war began in 2022.

In a statement posted after meeting his Ukrainian counterpart in Kyiv, Ablakwa said 272 Ghanaians are believed to have been lured into the conflict. Of those, an estimated 55 have been killed and two captured as prisoners of war.

The war between Russia and Ukraine, which started in 2022, has drawn in foreign fighters and mercenaries from several African nations. Ukraine said this week that more than 1,780 citizens from 36 African countries including Ghana  had been identified among Russia’s ranks, with some reportedly captured.

Several African governments have warned their citizens against joining the conflict. Countries such as Kenya and South Africa have also called on Russia to allow the repatriation of bodies and the return of captured nationals.
