According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), over 600,000 deaths were recorded in Nigeria due to insecurity between May 2023 and April 2024.

A report released on Wednesday evening revealed that users faced difficulty accessing the NBS website due to an attack, while confirming that at least 614,937 people lost their lives across the country. The highest toll was recorded in the northwest, plagued by banditry, with 206,030 deaths.

The northeast followed with 188,992 fatalities, while the southwest reported the lowest figure at 15,693.

“The report is accurate and from the NBS. While I cannot comment specifically on the causes of the high numbers, I can confirm the data’s validity,” NBS spokesperson Sunday Ichedi told Anadolu on Thursday.

The NBS also disclosed that 2,235,954 Nigerians were kidnapped, with a total ransom of ₦2,231,772,563,507 ($1,438,040,707.01) paid.

Nigeria faces numerous security challenges across its regions. The country continues to battle Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast, while banditry and kidnapping are rampant in the northwest.
