Randy Fine faces growing calls to resign after dehumanising comments
Florida Republican Congressman Randy Fine has triggered widespread condemnation after making a highly inflammatory comment comparing Muslims to dogs. In a post shared near the start of Ramadan, Fine wrote that if Americans were “forced to choose” between dogs and Muslims, the decision would be “not difficult.”
The remark was widely criticised as racist and dehumanising toward nearly two billion Muslims worldwide. Fine claimed his comment was in response to a joke made online by activist Nerdeen Kiswani, though many argued his response targeted an entire faith community rather than addressing an individual statement.
Political leaders and civil rights advocates reacted strongly. California Governor Gavin Newsom publicly called for Fine’s resignation, while several Democratic lawmakers described the statement as vile and unacceptable in any workplace, let alone Congress.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) also demanded accountability, pointing to what it says is a pattern of anti-Muslim rhetoric from Fine, including past remarks supporting extreme policies such as travel bans, deportations, and harsh language about Palestinians and Muslims.
Fine has faced criticism before for celebrating violence in Gaza and for making threatening remarks toward Muslim members of Congress. His latest statement has intensified calls for formal reprimand or resignation, with critics warning that such rhetoric should not be normalised in American politics.
