Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Thursday defended her government against accusations of being too aligned with Donald Trump, emphasizing that Italy’s foreign policy remains consistent with its decades-long Western alliances.

Meloni told lawmakers in Rome that Italy has maintained the same international positioning for about 80 years, dismissing criticism suggesting a choice between the US and Europe as a “now-cliched refrain.” She said her government is united in being “stubbornly Western,” borrowing a phrase from opposition leader Elly Schlein.

Meloni also addressed the ongoing tension with She warned that any restrictions or additional duties on transit could cause unpredictable economic consequences, and called for the full restoration of freedom of movement through the vital shipping lane.

Looking ahead, Meloni suggested that if the crisis escalates  may need to explore emergency economic measures. This could include temporarily suspending the Stability and Growth Pact, as was done during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring coordinated fiscal support across all member states.

Meloni stressed that such measures would be applied collectively, not to favor individual countries, highlighting Italy’s commitment to EU-wide financial stability amid global geopolitical risks.
