Nigeria has issued a strong warning to its citizens about being illegally recruited to fight in armed conflicts abroad, following reports that some Nigerians were tricked into joining military operations linked to Russia’s war in Ukraine.
In a statement released Sunday, Nigeria’s foreign ministry said it was deeply concerned about the growing number of Nigerians being misled or coerced into signing military service contracts and then being sent to dangerous combat zones.
Recent reports indicate that nationals from several African countries were lured to Russia with promises of high-paying jobs, only to end up on the front lines in Ukraine.
Other African governments have also reacted. Kenya announced plans to hold talks in Moscow, while South Africa said it is working with Russia to bring home citizens who were reportedly deceived into fighting.
Ukraine has claimed it identified more than 1,400 Africans from 36 countries fighting for Russian forces, highlighting the scale of the issue.
