On a rare visit to Ukraine, Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa urged President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to release two Ghanaian prisoners of war captured while fighting for Russia.
Speaking alongside Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga, Ablakwa said the two men were victims of manipulation and trafficking networks that allegedly lured African citizens into the conflict.
Ukraine has said that more than 1,780 citizens from 36 African countries have been identified among Russian ranks since the war began in 2022, with some captured on the battlefield.
Ablakwa expressed optimism that Zelenskyy would show compassion and release the detainees on humanitarian grounds. He also thanked Ukrainian authorities, saying Ghana had received assurances the prisoners were in good health and treated in accordance with international law.
Sybiga confirmed that the matter was discussed and called on Ghana to strengthen efforts to prevent recruitment of its citizens by Russia.
