The Tanzanian Ministry of Energy, in collaboration with UNDP and with the support of the EU and the Irish Embassy, hosted the first Regional Energy Efficiency Conference in Arusha. The event marked a significant step in the country’s efforts to boost economic growth, energy security, and environmental sustainability through enhanced energy efficiency.

A highlight of the conference was the official launch of the National Energy Efficiency Strategy (2024–2034) by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Dr. Doto Mashaka Biteko. This strategy, a vital component of Tanzania’s Energy Efficiency Action Plan, will play a crucial role in the nation’s development initiatives.

Dr. Biteko emphasized that the launch reflected the government’s commitment to reducing energy losses, currently at 14%, and promoting green jobs and innovation in energy efficiency technologies. EU Cooperation Head Marc Stalmans highlighted the need for harmonized energy efficiency standards across Tanzania and the East African Community (EAC), noting that such alignment would facilitate the adoption of efficient appliances, reduce costs, and boost regional integration.

UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Amon Manyama underscored the link between energy efficiency and achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 7 (affordable and sustainable energy) and SDG 13 (climate action). Improved energy efficiency, he noted, contributes by reducing waste, optimizing costs, and cutting carbon emissions.

Over 500 stakeholders from the EAC and Southern African Development Community (SADC), including government officials, academics, and private sector representatives, participated in the event. The conference fostered discussions on collaborative approaches, partnerships, and strategies to create a more energy-efficient and sustainable future.
