The Ghana Armed Forces rescued 71 fishermen after their boats were attacked by unidentified gunmen off the coast of Ghana.
The attack happened late Wednesday near Senya Bereku in the Central Region. According to local official Kalala Nyamekye Eghan, armed men stormed the fishing boats, robbed the fishermen, and stole their outboard motors — leaving them stranded at sea overnight.
On Thursday morning, the Ghanaian navy and air force carried out a search-and-rescue operation and safely brought all 71 fishermen back to shore. They were taken to a hospital for medical checks and later discharged. Authorities say investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible.
A navy spokesperson said the rescue operation remains active and urged the public to stay calm while further details are gathered.
The attack took place in the Gulf of Guinea, an area that has faced piracy and armed robbery at sea in recent years. However, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, such incidents have decreased since 2021 due to stronger naval patrols and improved regional cooperation.
The latest incident highlights ongoing security risks for fishermen and commercial vessels operating in West African waters.
