At least 14 Nigerian soldiers were killed and several others injured after terrorists launched two attacks on army bases in northeastern Borno State, according to security sources.
Militants from Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), which is linked to Islamic State, attacked a Nigerian army base in Ngoshe in the Gwoza area on Tuesday night. During the assault, nine soldiers and a local imam were killed, according to military sources.
The attackers reportedly forced troops to retreat from the base and seized weapons and ammunition. They also abducted an unknown number of women before leaving the area.
Around the same time, militants launched another attack on a military base in Pulka, also in Gwoza district. In that attack, five soldiers were killed, including a commanding officer.
Several wounded soldiers were later evacuated to Maiduguri for medical treatment.
The Nigerian Army has not officially commented on the incidents. Nigerian forces have recently intensified military operations in the northeast in an effort to weaken militant strongholds.
However, extremist groups like ISWAP and Boko Haram continue to carry out large attacks, often taking advantage of the region’s difficult terrain and porous borders.
For nearly two decades, Borno has remained the center of extremist violence in Nigeria. The conflict has killed thousands of people and displaced millions, according to humanitarian organizations.
