Ghana plans to present a resolution at the United Nations General Assembly calling for the transatlantic slave trade to be officially recognised as the “gravest crime in the history of humankind.” The resolution would also push for discussions on reparations for the lasting effects of slavery.

Ghana’s Foreign Ministry said the proposal could be submitted as early as this month and that it expects strong support from many countries. The initiative is part of a wider effort by African nations to seek accountability from former colonial powers for the historical injustices of slavery.

The African Union has already supported the proposal and is working to build a unified position among its 55 member states on what reparations might involve. These could include financial compensation, official apologies, and policy reforms.

Support is also expected from members of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), which has developed its own reparations plan for descendants of enslaved people.

While calls for reparations have grown stronger in recent years, some European leaders oppose reopening the issue, arguing that modern governments should not be held responsible for historical crimes. Ghana, however, says the goal is not to reopen old wounds but to acknowledge the truth and help heal the lasting consequences of slavery.
