An Indian-flagged oil tanker, the Jag Prakash oil tanker, has departed from the eastern side of the Strait of Hormuz after being delayed due to rising tensions in the Gulf region.

The tanker is transporting gasoline from Sohar Port in Oman and is expected to unload its cargo at Tanga Port in Tanzania on March 21, according to ship-tracking data.

Shipping in the Gulf has faced disruptions in recent weeks as Iran targeted the region following military strikes carried out by the United States and Israel.

Indian shipping official Rajesh Kumar Sinha said that four Indian-flagged vessels had been stuck east of the strait in the Gulf of Oman. The Jag Prakash has now resumed its journey, but three ships remain in the area with 76 Indian sailors on board.

Meanwhile, 24 Indian-flagged vessels are still stranded west of the strait in the Persian Gulf, carrying a total of 677 Indian sailors.

Tensions remain high after Iran’s new leadership warned that the country could keep the Strait of Hormuz closed as leverage in its ongoing confrontation with the United States and Israel.
