A senior United States counterterrorism official has resigned in protest against the ongoing US-Israeli war involving Iran, arguing that the conflict lacks legitimate justification.
Joseph Kent, Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, announced his resignation in a letter addressed to President Donald Trump, stating he could not “in good conscience” support the war. He asserted that Iran posed no imminent threat to the United States and claimed the decision to engage in conflict was influenced by external pressure, particularly from Israel and pro-war lobbying networks.
Kent, a former Green Beret with multiple combat deployments, is the first high-ranking official within the administration to step down over the issue. In his letter, he warned that the war was driven by misinformation campaigns that, in his view, distorted national security assessments and fueled pro-war narratives.
He further criticized what he described as a recurring pattern in US foreign policy, drawing parallels with the Iraq war, which he said resulted in significant human and economic losses. Kent emphasized that the current conflict risks repeating those mistakes by committing American lives to a war he believes does not serve national interests.
Reaffirming his stance, Kent concluded that he could not support sending another generation of Americans into a conflict that, according to him, offers no clear benefit to the country.
