Botswana has firmly denied allegations that it hosts a United States military base, emphasizing that national security discussions must be rooted in verified facts rather than speculation.
In an official statement released in Gaborone, government spokesperson Tuduetso Mokgosi clarified that the Thebephatshwa Air Base remains a fully sovereign military installation under the exclusive control of the Botswana Defence Force. He stressed that the facility operates solely in alignment with Botswana’s national interests.
According to authorities, the base plays a strategic role in strengthening emergency response systems, supporting regional peacekeeping missions, and enhancing humanitarian operations, while ensuring the operational readiness of the country’s armed forces.
Mokgosi also warned against the spread of misinformation, noting that unverified claims—especially when amplified beyond national borders—can fuel unnecessary tensions both domestically and across the region. He reaffirmed Botswana’s commitment to maintaining strong diplomatic ties with neighboring countries through dialogue, cooperation, and mutual respect.
