Mozambique has fully repaid its debt to the International Monetary Fund, clearing more than $630 million ahead of schedule. Just weeks earlier, the country still owed a significant amount, but by the end of March, the balance had dropped to zero.

This makes Mozambique the only country in that period to completely pay off its IMF credit—something that could improve its reputation with international lenders.

In simple terms, paying off this debt early puts Mozambique in a stronger position to ask for new financial help. Talks are already happening about a possible new IMF program to support the country’s economy and strengthen cooperation.

A previous agreement with the IMF, approved in 2022, was paused in 2025 before all funds were delivered. Now, with the debt cleared years ahead of the original 2029 schedule, Mozambique may have a fresh start in negotiations.

Despite this positive step, challenges remain. Mozambique is still a low-income country where a large part of the population—especially in rural areas—lives in poverty. The economy depends heavily on agriculture, natural resources, and foreign investment.

Overall, this early repayment is a strong financial signal, but improving everyday living conditions will take more time.
