Germany is preparing to send naval forces to the Mediterranean, positioning itself for a possible mission near the Strait of Hormuz—one of the world’s most important oil and trade routes.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced that Germany plans to deploy a minesweeper and a command-and-supply ship. The idea is not immediate action, but readiness—so Germany can respond quickly if parliament approves a mission.

The potential operation could be tied to the existing EU naval mission Operation Aspides, which currently focuses on protecting shipping in the Red Sea. Expanding its role to include the Strait of Hormuz would require legal adjustments and likely involve partners like the United States and the United Kingdom.

Germany’s role would focus on mine-clearing and ensuring safe passage for ships—critical as tensions in the region threaten global energy supplies and trade routes.

This move comes amid escalating conflict involving Iran, with reports of increased control over the strait and a U.S. naval presence in response.

In simple terms, Germany is getting its navy ready in case it’s needed to help keep one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes open and safe.
