A new survey reported by Internationale Politik shows that most people in Germany are not convinced their government has a clear plan regarding the Iran conflict.

About 68% of respondents said the government lacks a clear strategy, while only 28% believe there is a defined direction. Supporters of the conservative Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union were the only group where a slight majority felt confident in the government’s approach.

However, many others disagree. Even among supporters of the governing Social Democratic Party, more people feel there is no clear plan. Doubt is even stronger among opposition groups like Alternative for Germany, The Left, and Alliance 90/The Greens.

The concern is especially high in eastern Germany, where a large majority say the government’s position is unclear. Young people also stand out—around three-quarters of those aged 18 to 29 feel the same uncertainty.

This confusion may be linked to mixed signals from Chancellor Friedrich Merz. While he initially supported U.S. and Israeli actions against Iran, he has recently criticized the United States, including the administration of Donald Trump, for lacking a clear plan.

Overall, the survey highlights growing public concern and uncertainty about Germany’s role in an increasingly tense international situation.
