According to the unofficial results of the presidential elections in Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum became the country’s first female head of state.

Unofficial results of the elections held yesterday in Mexico have been announced. According to the rapid vote count in the country, 61-year-old Claudia Sheinbaum, the candidate of the ruling National Renewal Movement, who received between 58.3 percent and 60.7 percent of the votes, became the country’s first female head of state by an overwhelming margin. According to unofficial preliminary results, opposition candidate Xochitl Galvez received between 26.6 percent and 28.6 percent of the votes, while 38-year-old Jorge Alvarez Maynez, the only male candidate in the presidential election, received between 9.9 percent and 10.8 percent of the votes. Mexico’s National Electoral Institute (INE) reported a turnout of around 60-61 percent.

“I will be the first woman president of the 200-year-old Republic,” Sheinbaum said in her victory speech amid cheers from supporters. After the official results are announced, Sheinbaum’s vote share is expected to be the highest in Mexico’s democratic history.

Approximately 100 million registered voters in Mexico, with a population of 129 million, went to the polls yesterday to make choices for a total of 20,708 positions at the federal and local levels. In Mexico, where security problems were experienced during the election process, 38 candidates lost their lives as a result of attacks.
