At the 2026 Africa Political Outlook Summit held in Brussels, leaders and experts shared a clear message: Africa is making progress in governance—but serious challenges remain.

More than 300 decision-makers gathered to discuss the State of Governance in Africa 2026 Report, which gives a balanced view of what’s working and what still needs improvement across the continent.

According to Viwanou Gnassounou, there are encouraging signs, especially when it comes to elections. This year alone, about 15 major elections are expected, which will test how fair and inclusive political systems really are.

Leaders also emphasized the importance of cooperation. Mulambo Haimbe stressed that countries need stronger partnerships to move forward. Meanwhile, Ismael Nabe highlighted positive progress in Guinea, pointing to better governance and long-term economic planning.

The report outlines six key drivers that could shape Africa’s future:

  • Working with multiple global partners (plurilateralism)
  • Using natural resources like critical minerals wisely
  • Engaging the African diaspora
  • Recognizing the role of faith and culture
  • Encouraging creativity and innovation
  • Empowering young people

Overall, the message is that Africa is in a period of transition—facing both internal and global pressures—but also building the tools to turn challenges into real opportunities.
