Algeria paid a final tribute to Liamine Zeroual, who was laid to rest in his hometown of Batna with full military honors.
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune attended the مراسم, joining many mourners honoring a leader who played a key role during one of the country’s most difficult periods.
Zeroual, who died at 84 after a long illness, served as president from 1994 to 1999. Before that, he had a long military career, starting in the independence struggle against French rule and later rising to become a general and defense minister.
He was elected in Algeria’s first multi-party presidential election in 1995, winning over 60% of the vote. Despite remaining widely respected, he chose not to return to power after stepping down early in 1999.
The country observed three days of national mourning, reflecting the importance of his legacy in Algeria’s history.
