Minister of Mines and Renewable Energy, Mohamed Arkab, accelerated the strengthening of economic relations between Algeria and Egypt during an important meeting held in Algeria.
In five years, trade between Algeria and Egypt has increased from 600 million to 1 billion dollars. However, the aim is to further accelerate cooperation. This dynamic will be strengthened at the next session of the Algeria-Egypt Joint Commission, scheduled to take place in Cairo in early 2025. Priority sectors include synthetic fibers, packaging, renewable energy, and agro-food industries.
In-depth energy and mining cooperation
During his meeting with the delegation of the Egyptian company Arab Contractors, led by Vice President Sayed El Wazir, Mohamed Arkab identified several key areas of cooperation:
Development of oil and gas fields and construction of hydrocarbon infrastructure
Construction of energy plants and energy transformation
Development of mining deposits, especially iron from Gara Djebilet (3 billion tons of reserves), phosphate from Tébessa, and rare earth elements.
Egyptian companies such as Petrojet and Elsewedy Electric, alongside major Algerian players such as Sonatrach, Sonelgaz, and Sonarem, are also involved in these projects.
Infrastructure: a lever for development
The Minister of Public Works, Lakhdar Rekhroukh, also welcomed the Egyptian ambassador to discuss opportunities in the infrastructure sector. Egypt has shown interest in Algeria’s railway and guided transport projects.
Both countries are considering creating a joint group to develop collaborative projects, including internationally, to strengthen their position on the regional stage.
