Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama, when asked about Russian involvement in security in the Sahel, said on Wednesday that anyone committed to fighting terror is welcome.
Mahama told the Financial Times Africa Summit in London that he was not concerned about security assistance from Russia for countries in the region.
“My opinion on this is that anybody who is committed to the fight against terrorism is welcome,” he said.
His remarks come amid an increased terrorism threat in West Africa, including Boko Haram’s repeated attacks in Nigeria, and multiple terrorist incidents in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.
Alliance of Sahel States’ joint security force
The governments of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have since unveiled a joint security force, under the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) arrangement to fight terrorism in the region.
Official data shows that terrorism claims the lives of thousands of people annually in West Africa.
