The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, has condemned Iran’s recent missile and drone attacks on several Gulf countries, calling them reckless and a “massive strategic mistake.” Speaking during an emergency meeting of Arab foreign ministers held from Cairo, he said the attacks cannot be justified and stressed that Arab countries are not involved in the ongoing conflict.
The escalation began after military strikes launched on February 28 by the United States and Israel against Iran. In response, Iran has launched retaliatory attacks targeting U.S.-linked bases across the Gulf region, including in Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain. Some of these strikes have caused casualties and damage to infrastructure.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said his country would continue to respond to any attacks, while U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that negotiations with Iran were unlikely and hinted that the conflict could continue until Iran’s military and leadership are no longer functioning.
The situation has raised serious concerns about wider instability across the Middle East.
