A documentary by Hugo Sobelman highlights the peaceful struggle and creative energy of a group of young Afro-descendants living in Belleville, a multicultural district of Paris. The film follows their daily lives, friendships and artistic expression through music, humour and dance, offering a powerful portrait of youth navigating social challenges.

Among the protagonists is photographer Souleymane Fofana, known as Commeas, whose exhibition “Les 11” accompanies the film screenings during the festival where the documentary is presented in competition.

The collaboration between Sobelman and Fofana began when the young photographer was searching for a mentor to develop his craft. Their friendship grew around shared cultural and cinematic interests, often meeting at La Perm’, a community cultural space in Belleville where local residents gather to launch artistic, humanitarian and social projects.

Inspired by the atmosphere of this space, Fofana suggested that Sobelman film the moments of solidarity and creativity unfolding in the neighborhood, which eventually led to the documentary. The film follows the group of friends as they prepare the community event “Belleville en vrai” festival, illustrating how young people use art and collective initiatives to confront inequality and social pressures.

For Fofana, photography began as a personal passion rooted in family memories. Growing up in a large family, he enjoyed looking through photo albums until his sister gave him a camera, prompting him to photograph relatives. Over time, the hobby evolved into a professional career as his work gained recognition and opportunities.

Now exhibiting for the third time at the International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights in Geneva, Fofana hopes his work will share stories of resilience and inspire other young creatives.
