Skulls and bones from 28 bodies were discovered in a weekend police raid in southeast Nigeria, authorities have said, suspecting the deceased were victims of abduction.
Officers raiding criminal camps in the forests of Abia state discovered “a total of 28 human skulls and bones, suspected to be kidnap victims”, the local police command said on Sunday.
It was unclear when the victims were killed, and no arrests are yet to be made. Investigations are, however, ongoing, police said.
Besides abductions, often conducted by bandits incentivised by ransom fee, terrorism has been witnessed in Nigeria’s northeast, northwest, and centre of the country.
Central Nigeria also sees clashes over land between herders and farmers, and there are fears that such attacks are spreading to the southeast.
