A police chase in the U.S. state of Alabama ended in tragedy when a car trying to escape officers lost control and crashed into a tree, killing all four people inside.

The accident happened late Friday on a rural road in Pike County. Authorities said the group was in a 2022 Hyundai Elantra and no other vehicles were involved.

According to officials, three of the victims—including the driver—were not wearing seat belts and were thrown from the car, while a fourth passenger remained inside. All were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver was identified as Tykevious D. Russaw, 27. The other victims were Robert D. Hall, 27, and Quamay Richardson, 24. A 17-year-old passenger also died, but their name has not been released.

Authorities have not yet explained why the police pursuit began, and the incident is still under investigation.
