Ethiopia positions itself as a regional leader in infrastructure development with a strong focus on sustainability and inclusivity.

The Africa Infrastructure Development Program (PIDA) Week officially began today at the African Union Headquarters.

On this occasion, the minister announced the country’s commitment to creating modern transportation networks that not only foster economic growth but also improve regional connectivity.

Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Ethiopia launched the Green Legacy Initiative in 2019, an ambitious project aimed at combating climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

PIDA focuses on regional infrastructure and connectivity, and Ethiopia has made significant contributions to Africa’s transformation and integration.

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), one of the greenest energy sources, plays a key role in providing hydroelectric power to the region.

Additionally, the Ethiopia-Djibouti railway, an entirely electric corridor, connects regional ports to landlocked Ethiopia, boosting logistics, logistics efficiency, and regional trade.

Alemu also noted that, despite being landlocked, Ethiopia has a shipping line that significantly contributes to facilitating trade in the maritime sector.

The minister further stated that Ethiopian Airlines serves as a major hub, not only in passenger transport but also in facilitating connectivity across the continent.

Thus, “Ethiopia’s commitment to sustainable and inclusive infrastructure development is clearly reflected in these initiatives, positioning the country as a leader in regional growth and connectivity.”

He also added that recent global challenges have taught us the importance of building systems that are not only solid but also adaptable.

“By investing in resilient infrastructure, we ensure that our communities can thrive even in times of adversity,” he said, adding that it is equally important to ensure that infrastructure projects serve all segments of society.

He emphasized the need to advocate for policies that facilitate the smooth movement of goods, services, and people between our nations.

In this context, Ethiopia is working on the development of mega infrastructure projects contributing to regional integration.
