Hakan Fidan, the foreign minister of Türkiye, said negotiations between the United States and Iran are currently stalled amid escalating conflict in the region.
Speaking to Associated Press, Fidan said the current situation makes formal diplomacy difficult, noting that Iranian leaders feel “betrayed” after being attacked while engaged in nuclear negotiations with Washington.
Despite the diplomatic freeze, he suggested that Tehran remains open to informal or back-channel negotiations that could help reduce tensions.
Fidan stressed that Türkiye’s main objective is to avoid becoming involved in the conflict, even as regional tensions rise.
“I know that we are being provoked and we will be provoked, but this is our objective,” he said. “We want to stay out of this war.”
The Turkish minister also criticised the policies of Benjamin Netanyahu, arguing that Israel regularly portrays regional actors as enemies in order to advance its political agenda.
According to Fidan, Israel’s strategy under Netanyahu involves identifying adversaries in the region, whether that is Türkiye or another country, and he accused Israel of pursuing territorial ambitions rather than focusing on security concerns.
Fidan warned that as long as such policies continue, the Middle East is likely to remain vulnerable to recurring conflict.
