A moment at a recent FIFA meeting has drawn strong reactions after Jibril Rajoub, head of the Palestinian Football Association, refused to shake hands with an Israeli counterpart during the congress in Vancouver.

According to Palestinian official Tayseer Nasrallah, the gesture was meant to reflect solidarity with Palestinians affected by the ongoing conflict in Gaza Strip and the West Bank. He described it as a stand for “national dignity” and support for Palestinian rights.

Rajoub later said the decision was intentional, emphasizing that symbolic actions can send strong messages, especially during times of conflict. The incident happened when he declined to greet Israeli representative Bassem Sheikh Suleiman on stage after a speech.

Beyond the gesture, tensions remain over deeper issues within international football. The Palestinian association has long called on FIFA to act against Israeli clubs operating in settlements in territories widely considered occupied under international law.

While FIFA acknowledged some violations by the Israeli association—such as discrimination—it stopped short of major sanctions, issuing only a fine and symbolic measures. This has led Palestinian officials to file an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, seeking stronger action.

The situation highlights how global sports events can become arenas for political expression, especially when conflicts affect athletes and institutions.

In simple terms: what looked like a simple handshake refusal was actually a powerful political statement tied to a much larger dispute.
