Gabon has suspended access to several social media platforms, warning that certain online posts could harm social cohesion and undermine national security.

The country’s media regulator, the High Authority for Communication (HAC), ordered an immediate suspension “until further notice,” accusing some digital users and activists of spreading defamatory, hateful, and abusive content in violation of Gabonese law.

Internet monitoring group NetBlocks reported that services such as Meta platforms, YouTube, and TikTok have been restricted.

The move comes as Gabon continues its political transition following the election of President Brice Oligui Nguema, who came to power after leading a coup in August 2023 that ended decades of rule by Ali Bongo’s family.
