The artist’s latest collection features powerful references to their upbringing in Senegal.

The vibrant colors and geometric patterns in Gueye Modou’s artwork are inspired by the handwoven mats that form the rich tapestry of African culture.

Gueye is an artist who believes in weaving the essence of tradition with the threads of modernity.

The collection, “Les Nattes de Mon Enfance” (“The Mats of My Childhood”), recounts his childhood in Senegal, a time when brightly colored mats adorned many homes.

Speaking to TRT Africa, the figurative artist said, “The mats were central to daily life, often used as seating or bedding during family gatherings. They also served as play areas for children.”

According to the Clarendon Fine Art platform, figurative art encompasses all forms of modern art with strong references to the real world, particularly the human figure. This includes paintings depicting objects and scenes, as well as portraits.

African Aesthetics

In his painting “Echo des Racines” (“Echo of Roots”), Gueye highlights the aesthetics and history of African care by portraying a figure with a hairstyle evocative of tree branches or roots.
