Minister of Energy and Natural Resources: “Turkey’s Household Electricity Needs Are Met by Wind and Solar Energy”
Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar emphasized Turkey’s success in renewable energy, stating, “We meet the annual electricity needs of all households in Turkey solely with the electricity generated from wind and solar power plants.”
A Major Transformation in Renewable Energy
According to Ministry data, Turkey’s installed solar power capacity has reached 19,500 megawatts, accounting for 16.6% of the country’s total installed capacity. With a combined capacity of 31,000 megawatts from wind and solar energy, Turkey ranks among the top 11 countries in the world in renewable energy capacity and 5th in Europe.
Increasing Share of Domestic Resources in Electricity Production
In the first 10 months of 2024, Turkey produced a total of 289 million 406 thousand megawatt-hours of electricity. Of this production, 61.7% came from domestic resources, compared to 57.1% in the same period last year.
Growing Electricity Demand and Investments
Minister Bayraktar pointed out that Turkey’s electricity demand has increased by 4.4% annually over the past 20 years, reaching 335 million megawatt-hours. He also noted that both the public and private sectors have made significant investments in infrastructure to meet this growing demand.
A Cleaner and More Sustainable Future
Turkey’s progress in the renewable energy sector is seen as a crucial step toward a sustainable energy future. The transformation in solar and wind energy highlights the importance of environmentally friendly power production.
