Kenya has begun deploying body-worn cameras for customs and border control officers in a move aimed at improving transparency and facilitating legitimate trade and travel.
The initiative, led by the Kenya Revenue Authority, will see about 350 body cameras installed at border posts and key transport hubs, including Jomo Kenyatta International Airport one of Africa’s busiest airports.
Officials say the cameras are designed to deter corruption and help resolve disputes more quickly by recording interactions between officers and travelers. According to the authority, recorded footage will promote professionalism and accountability among staff.
The rollout comes amid ongoing concerns about bribery and collusion schemes among some border officials, which have been blamed for enabling tax evasion and smuggling.
The devices are equipped with real-time GPS tracking, secure recording systems, and live-streaming capabilities, allowing supervisors to monitor activities and review incidents when necessary.
