President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s Senegal Patriotic Workers, Ethics, and Brotherhood Party won 130 of the 165 parliamentary seats, according to provisional results.
Senegal’s ruling party, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s Senegal Patriotic Workers, Ethics, and Brotherhood Party (PASTEF), won 130 of the 165 parliamentary seats, according to provisional results announced on Thursday.
According to the results of Sunday’s elections, the coalition led by former Senegalese President Macky Sall secured 16 seats, finishing second, while the coalition of former Prime Minister Amadou Ba won seven seats, and the coalition of Dakar Mayor Barthelemy Dias claimed three seats.
A total of 41 parties, coalitions, and political groups participated in the elections in the West African country.
Of the 7.3 million registered voters, over 3.6 million cast valid votes.
The final results are expected to be announced in the coming days by the Constitutional Council.
Faye had dissolved the opposition-majority National Assembly in September, calling for elections to reduce tensions between the legislative and executive branches.
This move came six months after Faye’s election on an opposition platform.
Faye stated that the opposition-dominated assembly had made it difficult to implement the “systemic transformation” he had promised during his campaign.
