Kenya has launched a major voter registration drive, with young people leading the push using social media, music, and creative campaigns to get their peers involved.
The effort comes after widespread youth-led protests in 2024, sparked by policies from President William Ruto. While the protests have ended, many young Kenyans remain frustrated over economic hardship, corruption, and unmet promises.
Now, a new movement is trying to turn that frustration into political participation.
The voter registration campaign, led by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, aims to register millions of new voters—most of them young people—before the next election.
At the same time, youth-driven initiatives like #NikoKadi (“I have a voter’s card”) are gaining traction. Through TikTok videos, music events, and even discounts for registered voters, young activists are making voter registration feel trendy and important.
For many, this is about creating change. Some say registering to vote is a way to fight corruption and improve the country’s future. Others are encouraging friends—sometimes with humor or pressure—to sign up.
Despite historically low youth turnout in past elections, organizers believe this new energy could reshape Kenya’s political landscape.
The message from young Kenyans is clear: real change starts with participation.
