Nigeria is set to receive 11,200 doses of the Mpox vaccine from the United States.

Gavi announced that the vaccine shipment has arrived in Abuja and is expected to be delivered today. This delivery follows agreements signed in November, aimed at supporting global and continental responses through the donation of 305,000 doses of the Mpox vaccine.

The vaccines, produced by Bavarian Nordic, are being allocated to affected countries through the Mpox Access and Allocation Mechanism, led by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), Gavi, UNICEF, and the World Health Organization (WHO). In addition to Nigeria, Gavi has provided emergency funding and 500,000 doses of vaccines to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon, and Rwanda.

Nigeria became the first country to receive Mpox vaccines when it received 10,000 doses from the U.S. government in August. The U.S. government’s commitment to supplying over 1 million doses to countries responding to the global Mpox outbreak complements Gavi’s efforts. Furthermore, Gavi stated it has established an initial response fund to cover delivery and related costs.
