Nigerian soldiers have killed at least 60 suspected terrorists after repelling a coordinated attack on a military base in Borno State, according to the army

The military said the overnight assault targeted the 68 Battalion position in Mallam Fatori, near the border with Niger. Troops, supported by air units, responded forcefully and neutralised dozens of attackers, including several commanders

Authorities believe the attackers were linked to Boko Haram, and said they were advancing on foot with support from armed drones

The attack came just days after deadly suicide bombings in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno, which killed 23 people and injured many others

Military officials also reported that an Al Qaeda-affiliated group carried out multiple attacks on military installations earlier in the week, highlighting a surge in violence in the region

The conflict in Nigeria has persisted for over a decade, killing more than 40,000 people and displacing around two million, according to the United Nations
