The United Nations has raised serious concerns about growing dangers faced by journalists around the world. Speaking on World Press Freedom Day, UN rights chief Volker Türk warned that increasing attacks on the media are damaging democracy and accountability.

He described a free press as essential for society, helping to inform the public, expose wrongdoing, and keep governments transparent. But journalism is becoming more dangerous at least 14 journalists have already been killed this year, and very few past killings have led to justice.

Türk highlighted the extreme risks in conflict zones, especially in Gaza, where many journalists have lost their lives. However, threats are not limited to war areas. Reporters worldwide also face surveillance, legal pressure, and online abuse issues that particularly affect women journalists.

He called on governments to bette r protect journalists, remove restrictive laws, and ensure those responsible for attacks are held accountable. He also urged tech companies to tackle misinformation and online harassment.

The message is clear: without protection for journalists, the flow of reliable information—and democracy itself—is at risk.
