Cyril Ramaphosa, president of South Africa, is expected to speak at the funeral of American civil rights leader Jesse Jackson in Chicago on Saturday. The Jackson family invited Ramaphosa to deliver remarks recognizing Jackson’s strong support for the anti-apartheid struggle.
Jackson, who died last month at the age of 84 after battling health problems including Parkinson’s disease, was a major figure in the American civil rights movement. During the 1970s and 1980s, he strongly advocated for international sanctions against South Africa’s apartheid government and supported the global campaign to end racial segregation.
The funeral events will include a large public ceremony at House of Hope in Chicago, expected to attract many prominent political figures. Former U.S. leaders such as Joe Biden, Barack Obama, and Bill Clinton are also expected to attend.
The ceremony will feature musical tributes from performers including Jennifer Hudson and gospel singers Marvin Winans and BeBe Winans.
