Botswana has reportedly discovered 15 rare-earth minerals, a development that could significantly boost its economy. Canadian firm Tsodilo Resources Limited announced in February 2026 that exploration at its Gchwihaba Metals project in northwest Botswana revealed promising signs of all 15 rare-earth elements listed on the U.S. Geological Survey’s 2025 Critical Minerals List.

The company identified two key sites, C26 and C27, where “high-grade” minerals were found between 20 and 50 metres below the surface — a depth considered cost-effective for mining. Further studies are still needed, but the firm says the deposits could hold major commercial value.

Rare-earth minerals are essential for products like electric vehicle batteries, mobile phones, defence systems, telecom infrastructure, and wind turbines. Currently, China dominates global production, accounting for about 70% of mined supply and nearly 90% of processing capacity — a strategic concern for many Western countries.

The exploration also uncovered other valuable minerals, including copper, cobalt, nickel, vanadium, and silver.

If confirmed, the discovery could help Botswana diversify its economy, which heavily depends on diamonds. Diamonds account for around 80% of export revenue and 25% of GDP, but global prices have fallen due to growing demand for cheaper lab-grown alternatives. President Duma Boko has said his government is focusing on expanding mining of base and critical minerals to attract investment and reduce economic vulnerability.
