KYIV, Ukraine Russia carried out a massive overnight attack on Ukraine, firing 420 drones and 39 missiles, including 11 ballistic missiles, targeting critical infrastructure and residential areas across eight regions, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported on Thursday. Dozens of civilians, including children, were injured, though total casualties have not yet been confirmed.
Zelenskyy spoke by phone with Donald Trump, thanking him for his “efforts and engagement” in supporting peace negotiations. U.S. representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met with Rustem Umerov, head of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, to discuss the ongoing US-brokered talks.
The peace negotiations, held in Geneva, are currently deadlocked over disputed Ukrainian territories claimed by Russia. Thursday’s discussions also included planning for postwar recovery and the possibility of a prisoner exchange. Russia returned 1,000 bodies of fallen soldiers to Ukraine and received 35 bodies of its own troops in exchange, according to Vladimir Medinsky.
Zelenskyy reported that Russian strikes hit gas infrastructure in the Poltava region and electrical substations in Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk region. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted most missiles, aided by Western-provided interceptors, highlighting Ukraine’s reliance on foreign military support.
Andrii Sybiha called on allied countries for more military aid, warning that Vladimir Putin continues to escalate attacks despite global demands for an end to the war.
