According to Google’s annual Year in Search report, the Social Health Authority (SHA) emerged as Kenya’s most searched term in 2024.
Replaced by the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), the Social Health Authority (SHA) gained nationwide attention for its transformative impact on health policy.
Google highlighted that the implementation of SHA was closely linked to discussions about the future of healthcare in Kenya, sparking curiosity among a broad audience while driving major changes in the sector.
The 2024 Finance Bill ranked second, as public debates and protests led by Gen Z activists against proposed tax hikes resulted in its withdrawal and heightened search interest.
The 2024 U.S. Presidential Elections also captured Kenyans’ attention, with searches about Donald Trump’s re-election ranking third.
In personal searches, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua became the most sought-after figure following his removal from office. Cabinet Secretaries Rebecca Miano and Soipan Tuya also drew significant interest due to their high-profile roles.
Globally, reggae artist Vybz Kartel, televangelist Benny Hinn, and Donald Trump led international search trends in 2024.
Searches related to sports surged, with AFCON, Euro 2024, and the Summer Olympics among the top events queried.
Tragic events in Kenya also influenced trends. The passing of content creator Brian Chira in a hit-and-run incident topped the list of death-related searches. Other notable losses included Charles Ouda, Rita Tinina, and Njambi Koikai.
This year’s search trends reflect Kenyans’ keen interest in significant political shifts, global events, and personal tragedies throughout 2024.
