The South African Border Agency has announced that only small vehicles and individuals will be allowed to cross the border into Mozambique.
South Africa has announced that it will close the Lebombo border post with Mozambique to truck traffic starting Tuesday due to security concerns.
Mozambique has been rocked by violent protests since late October, following the election authority’s announcement that ruling party presidential candidate Daniel Chapo won the controversial October vote, amid allegations of fraud.
The Constitutional Council, Mozambique’s highest court, on Monday validated the election results, extending the Frelimo party’s half-century-long rule.
The South African Border Management Authority (BMA) told public broadcaster SABC that truck traffic will remain suspended “until assurances are given that the corridor is secured by the military and police on the Mozambican side.”
Small vehicles only
The border agency stated that only small vehicles and individuals would be allowed to cross into Mozambique.
It was noted that the decision was made prior to the Mozambican Constitutional Council’s announcement.
Lebombo is the main border post for goods and freight traffic between the two countries.
Last month, South Africa announced the temporary closure of the busy border post due to ongoing post-election violence in Mozambique.
