The 4th Red Sea International Film Festival, held in the port city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, continues to captivate audiences from around the globe.
This year’s festival boasts an extensive lineup, featuring over 120 films from 81 countries, with 16 films competing in the Feature Film Competition.
One of the highlights is the Sudanese drama My Driver and I, which explores the profound bond between a taxi driver and the young Saudi woman he drives. Lead actor Mustafa Shehata describes the film as deeply personal and emotional.
Shehata summarizes the central theme: “The story revolves around an immigrant taxi driver who treats a young client like his own daughter. This man, who has a daughter in Sudan, has not returned to his home country for years.” Despite significant cultural and generational differences, the driver forms a lasting connection with his young passenger, Salma. “It’s also a story about trust, as the girl’s parents rely on him: the father is at work, and the mother is perpetually busy,” says Shehata.
Saudi Arabia is expanding its influence in film, sports, and entertainment. Since its launch in 2021, the Red Sea International Film Festival has attracted major global talent. This year’s event features Bollywood icons Aamir Khan and Ranbir Kapoor alongside Academy Award winners Viola Davis and Spike Lee.
However, critics argue such events may serve to divert attention from Saudi Arabia’s human rights record. These festivals also aim to enhance the kingdom’s international reputation and cultural impact.
