Switzerland is set to summon Israel’s ambassador following the approval of a controversial death penalty law targeting Palestinians convicted of deadly attacks.
The Swiss Foreign Ministry said the move is part of formally expressing its opposition to the law, which was passed by the Knesset. Ambassador Tibor Schlosser will be called in to hear Switzerland’s position directly.
Swiss officials made it clear that they oppose the death penalty in all circumstances, saying it violates the right to life and human dignity. This stance has been communicated both publicly and through diplomatic channels.
The law, supported by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, introduces execution by hanging and grants anonymity and legal protection to those carrying it out.
Switzerland’s response reflects wider international criticism, as many countries and human rights groups argue the law is discriminatory and raises serious legal and ethical concerns.
In simple terms, Switzerland is using diplomatic pressure to show strong disagreement with Israel’s new law and defend its stance on human rights.
