Kenya has completed a 400-kilovolt transmission line with Tanzania, marking a significant step towards boosting renewable energy exports and enhancing regional energy integration.

Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi emphasized that this milestone strengthens regional energy cooperation and allows Tanzania and other East African nations to benefit from Kenya’s renewable energy capacity. “Kenya has completed the construction of a transmission line enabling Tanzania to access renewable energy from both Kenya and Ethiopia,” Wandayi expressed with satisfaction.

Kenya, a leader in renewable energy within the region, boasts a diverse portfolio, including geothermal (841.1 MW), hydropower (810.4 MW), wind (425.5 MW), and solar (210.3 MW). According to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), as of December 2023, 79.56% of Kenya’s total installed capacity came from renewable sources.

The announcement coincided with the East African Power Pool (EAPP) Regional Trade Conference, which brought together over 300 delegates, including African energy ministers, regulators, and development partners. The conference focused on strategies for advancing regional energy integration and fostering collaboration in Africa’s energy sector.
