The 2024 National Polo Carnival Tournament has officially started in Abuja, at the renowned Guards Polo Resort located in the Asokoro district.

As in previous years, this year’s tournament is attracting attention with its impressive competition and grandeur. At least 28 polo teams will fiercely compete for five different trophies. Rubicon and Mangal Cement Polo Teams will battle for the prestigious Presidential Cup.

The 2024 tournament, unlike previous years, will feature only Abuja-based polo clubs after the cancellation of international polo tournaments due to African Horse Sickness (AHS). This, however, has turned the event into a more exciting local derby.

Other trophies in the tournament include the Legislative Shield, FCT Minister’s Cup, Guards Challenge, and the Minor Cup. The Minor Cup will showcase equally strong and ambitious teams competing for the low-goal prize. This year, especially Abuja-based clubs are in the spotlight.

Club captain Nasir Lukat stated that all players, horses, and fields are prepared for the tournament, promising a great competition and entertainment.

The National Polo Carnival was launched in 2009 as part of the Abuja City Carnival. The City Carnival is a month-long festival held annually to celebrate Nigeria’s unity, bringing together various activities like sports events, cultural exhibitions, and parades.
