The Constitutional Council of Mozambique, the country’s highest judicial body, has confirmed the victory of the ruling FRELIMO party in the October elections.
The decision comes after opposition protests, which resulted in hundreds of deaths over two months, challenging the election results.
Judge Lucia da Luz Ribeiro, President of the Constitutional Council, announced that FRELIMO’s candidate, Daniel Francisco Chapo, has been elected as the new President of the Republic of Mozambique.
The election results, announced by the Election Commission on October 9, had been heavily criticized by the opposition, leading to tensions across the country. This decision, made after the opposition protests, could further deepen the political crisis in the country.
