Heavy rains in Kenya caused a dramatic rescue at Tsavo East National Park, where an elephant became trapped in deep mud.

The animal was stuck near the River Galana in the Chakama area of Kilifi County. Local residents alerted park authorities on Wednesday morning after spotting the elephant struggling inside a steep sinkhole that was too deep for it to climb out of.

Rescue teams from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) worked together with the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust to free the animal. The operation was described as very challenging because the hole was steep, making it difficult to position the heavy-duty straps needed to pull the elephant out.

After discussing with the on-duty veterinarian, the team decided to avoid using anesthesia and instead carefully secure straps around the elephant. The straps were then attached to a vehicle, which slowly pulled the bull elephant to safety.

KWS confirmed that the elephant was successfully rescued and that teams stayed in the area to ensure it moved away from nearby homes. Officials praised the quick action of the local community, highlighting how cooperation between residents and conservation teams played a key role in saving the animal.
