Scholars and diplomats gathered at Istanbul University’s African Studies Application and Research Center (AUAM) to examine the evolving trajectory of Türkiye–Somalia relations during a high-level academic forum.

Held under the theme “Türkiye–Somalia Relations from Past to Present,” the discussions brought together leading experts, including Osman Bülent Zülfika, to explore the historical, diplomatic, military, and socioeconomic dimensions of the partnership.

Contributions from prominent academics such as Gökhan Kavak, Cihat Yaycı, Ahmet Kavas, and Aydın Özkan provided a comprehensive perspective on the growing ties between the two nations.

Participants highlighted that relations have evolved beyond traditional diplomacy into a more integrated and strategic framework. Türkiye’s support for Somalia’s security sector—particularly through training programs and institutional cooperation—was identified as a key factor in strengthening state capacity.

The forum also underscored Türkiye’s sustained diplomatic presence in Mogadishu, which has facilitated close coordination with Somali authorities in governance, development, and institutional reform—reflecting a long-term and structured partnership approach.

Education and human capital development were identified as central pillars, with initiatives led by the Türkiye Maarif Foundation and academic opportunities in Türkiye contributing to the development of a skilled Somali workforce.

Economic cooperation is also expanding, with growing interest in offshore energy projects and improved connectivity through direct flights between Mogadishu and Istanbul, enhancing trade, mobility, and humanitarian access.

At the regional level, Türkiye’s diplomatic engagement was highlighted through initiatives such as the 2024 Ankara Process, aimed at fostering dialogue between Somalia and Ethiopia and promoting regional stability.

The forum also addressed broader regional issues, including the ongoing crisis in Sudan, analyzing its political roots, humanitarian impact, and potential pathways toward peace.

Concluding the event, Prof. Ahmet Kavas emphasized Türkiye’s growing role in international mediation and the importance of sustained cooperation for long-term regional stability.
